VA.gov sign-in help: Login.gov, ID.me and CLEAR
VA.gov and the VA: Health and Benefits app now take only three sign-in accounts: Login.gov, ID.me or CLEAR. VA removed the My HealtheVet username option on March 5, 2025 and DS Logon on Nov. 18, 2025. Your records aren't lost. Once you sign in with a verified new account, you see the same information.
1. Pick an account
- Login.gov is run by the U.S. government. You need a personal email, a password of at least 12 characters and an MFA method. To verify, you need an unexpired driver's license, state ID or U.S. passport book. You can verify online or at a participating post office.
- ID.me is a private company under contract. You need an email, a password and an MFA method. You can verify online, on a video call or in person at a participating UPS Store.
- CLEAR is a private company. You need a smartphone with a front camera, your SSN and a government ID. It uses passkeys for MFA.
- Not sure if you already have one? VA says the easiest way to find out is to start creating one. The provider tells you if the account already exists.
2. Sign in
- Go to VA.gov and select Sign in.
- Choose ID.me, Login.gov or CLEAR and follow that provider's prompts.
- The first time, complete identity verification. It's a one-time step that often takes about 10 minutes.
3. Forgot password or lost your MFA phone
- Reset it on the provider's own site (ID.me, Login.gov or CLEAR). VA staff can't reset these passwords, not even the My HealtheVet help desk.
- Changed phone numbers or lost your authenticator? Use the provider's account-recovery or MFA-reset help (linked below).
4. Can't verify your identity
- Login.gov: if it can't verify your phone, VA suggests trying ID.me instead. You can also contact Login.gov support.
- ID.me: try the video-call or in-person option.
- No phone or no U.S. phone number? VA lists options such as security keys, backup codes, landlines and verification by mail with Login.gov.
5. Error after verifying
- ID.me's help article suggests clearing cache and cookies, enabling cookies, updating your browser, closing every browser window and signing in again.
Still stuck
- Call VA's technical support at 866-279-3677. Use the provider's help center for account problems.
- You can always manage benefits by phone, mail or in person without an online account.
