VA claim timeline: the 8 steps and how long a claim takes
You filed a VA disability claim and the status tool says "Step 3" for weeks. Here's what each of VA's 8 steps actually means, what VA's own numbers say about timing, and what (if anything) you should do at each step.
How long does a VA claim take?
68.2 days was VA's published average to complete disability-related claims in September 2026 (VA's "after you file" page, last updated Oct 5, 2026). That's an average across claims, not a promise for yours. VA says the time depends on:
- The type of claim you filed
- How many conditions you claimed and how complex they are
- How long it takes VA to collect the evidence
The 8 steps, in VA's words (plain English)
| Step | What VA is doing | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Claim received | VA confirms it has your claim. Online: an on-screen message right after you submit. By mail: a letter about 1 week (plus mailing time) after VA gets it. | Save the confirmation. |
| 2. Initial review | VA checks for basic info like your name and Social Security number. If something is missing, VA contacts you. | Answer any VA letter fast. |
| 3. Evidence gathering | VA makes sure it has the evidence it needs. It may ask you for evidence, schedule a claim exam (C&P exam), request private medical records, or pull VA records. VA says this is usually the longest step. | Go to every exam VA schedules. Send anything VA asks for. |
| 4. Evidence review | VA reviews all the evidence. If it needs more, or you send more, the claim goes back to Step 3. | Nothing, unless VA asks. |
| 5. Rating | VA decides the claim and sets your disability rating. More evidence sends it back to Step 3. | Nothing, unless VA asks. |
| 6. Preparing decision letter | VA writes your decision letter: rating, monthly payment amount, and payment start date. More evidence sends it back to Step 3. | Nothing, unless VA asks. |
| 7. Final review | A senior reviewer checks the claim and the decision letter. | Nothing. |
| 8. Claim decided | Your decision letter is in the claim status tool to read and download. A mailed copy should arrive within 10 business days (VA says it may take longer). | Read it. Check the rating and the effective date. |
Why claims bounce back to Step 3
You can send evidence at any time. But VA says if you send evidence after Step 3, your claim goes back to Step 3 for review. The same happens at Steps 4, 5 and 6 whenever VA needs more evidence. That's why a claim can look like it went "backward." It isn't lost.
Practical takeaway: get your evidence in early. If you're still on active duty with 180 to 90 days left, a BDD pre-discharge claim lets you start before you separate. If you aren't ready to file yet, an intent to file holds your start date for 1 year.
Where to check your status
- Sign in to VA.gov and open the claim status tool. Can't sign in? See VA.gov sign-in help.
- Or call VA at 800-827-1000.
VA says you don't need to do anything while you wait unless it sends you a letter asking for more information, and you shouldn't miss scheduled exams.
After the decision
- Your letter shows your rating, monthly amount and payment start date. See what your rating pays on the 2026 VA disability pay chart, and check the math with the combined rating calculator.
- Back pay goes back to your effective date. How that date is set: VA back pay and effective dates.
If you disagree with the decision
VA offers 3 decision review options. VA's published goals:
| Option | When to use it | VA's goal |
|---|---|---|
| Supplemental Claim (VA Form 20-0995) | You have new and relevant evidence | Average of 125 days |
| Higher-Level Review (VA Form 20-0996) | You think there's an error; no new evidence | Average of 125 days |
| Board Appeal (VA Form 10182) | You want a Veterans Law Judge to review it | Direct Review docket: average of 365 days (longer for Evidence Submission and Hearing dockets) |
Deadlines for each option matter for your back pay. They're covered in VA back pay and effective dates.
