VA disability pay dates (2026 and 2027): when VA pays
Quick answer: VA pays disability compensation once a month, in arrears: the benefit for a month is paid on the 1st of the following month. If the 1st falls on a Saturday or Sunday, VA pays on the Friday before. If the 1st is a federal holiday, VA pays on the weekday before, even though that's still in the earlier month (38 U.S.C. 5120(e)). VA's own benefits bulletin puts it the same way: "benefits for a particular month are paid the first business day of the following month" (VBA).
The next VA payments, worked out from the rule
VA doesn't post a 2026–2027 payment calendar on VA.gov that we could find, so we don't publish a full-year date list. Here are the next three payments, worked out from the law above, plus how to check any other month yourself.
| Benefit month | Normal date (the 1st) | Paid on | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| October 2026 | Sun., Nov. 1, 2026 | Fri., Oct. 30, 2026 | Weekend: Friday before |
| November 2026 | Tue., Dec. 1, 2026 | Tue., Dec. 1, 2026 | Normal business day |
| December 2026 | Fri., Jan. 1, 2027 (New Year's Day) | Thu., Dec. 31, 2026 | Holiday: weekday before |
Cross-check: DFAS's official military retired pay schedule uses the same weekend/holiday shift, and it lists the same three dates (Oct. 30, Dec. 1 and Dec. 31, 2026) for those months (DFAS pay schedule; see our military pay dates page). Your real deposit date is whatever shows in your VA.gov payment history.
The Dec. 31, 2026 payment is the one to watch. It's the December benefit, so it's the first payment at the new rate if the 2027 cost-of-living raise takes effect Dec. 1, 2026. See 2027 VA COLA (3.6%).
How to work out any month's pay date
- Start with the 1st of the month after the benefit month. (Pay for March comes on April 1.)
- Saturday or Sunday? Move back to the Friday before (38 U.S.C. 5120(e)).
- Federal holiday? Move back to the weekday before (not a Saturday). In practice the holidays that can land on the 1st are New Year's Day (every January 1) and Labor Day (when September 1 is a Monday).
- Otherwise it's paid on the 1st.
That's why some months get paid "early," in the same month they're for. It's the rule, not a bonus, so budget for the longer gap until the next payment.
Why does my bank show it a different day?
The date above is when VA sends the payment. Some banks and credit unions make direct deposits available a day or more early; that's the bank's own policy, so ask your bank (people search for this with Chime, USAA and Navy Federal). If a payment is late, check with your bank first, then VA.
Your first payment after a new rating
- VA says that if your decision notice shows at least a 10% rating, you'll get your first payment within 15 days (VA: after you get a rating).
- That first payment can include back pay. Payment starts on the first day of the month after your effective date (38 CFR 3.31); see VA back pay and effective dates to count the months.
- After that, you're on the regular monthly schedule above.
Payment missing or wrong?
- Check VA.gov payment history for the amount and deposit date. On that page you can also sign up for a text message every time a recurring payment goes out (VA says if you opt in on or before the 10th, the texts start with that month's payment).
- Confirm your direct deposit info is current in your VA.gov profile.
- Still missing? Call VA at 800-827-1000 (TTY: 711), Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET.
Amount looks off? Compare it to the official 2026 VA disability pay chart for your rating and dependents, and check your combined rating with the VA math calculator. Military retiree? CRDP or CRSC can change what lands from DFAS vs. VA; see CRSC vs CRDP.
