Where do these BAH rates come from?

From the Defense Travel Management Office's official 2026 BAH rate file (BAH-ASCII-2026, all locations and pay grades), effective Jan. 1, 2026, including the Abilene/Dyess AFB (TX270) temporary increase effective May 16, 2026.

What changes my BAH rate?

Your duty station's ZIP code (its military housing area), your pay grade and whether you have dependents. Pick all three above to see your monthly rate.

When do 2027 BAH rates come out?

DoD hasn't announced a date. DoD's military pay site says BAH rates are "reviewed and released annually, usually in mid-December." We'll load the official 2027 file into this calculator once it's published.

Is BAH taxable?

No. IRS Publication 3 lists BAH among the living and moving allowances excluded from gross income.

Does the GI Bill use these rates?

Yes. VA bases the 2026-27 Post-9/11 GI Bill housing allowance for in-person classes on 2026 E-5 with-dependents BAH for the location. See our GI Bill rates 2026-2027 page.
