  2. DM Welcome Center appointment. Your unit's Commander's Support Staff (or the Military Personnel Flight, if your squadron has no CSS) schedules it within 72 business hours of your arrival. You'll do Finance, the Traffic Management Office and Medical in about an hour, and spouses and children should come if they can.
  3. Orientation. Everyone is scheduled for Right Start (newcomers orientation). First-term Airmen and first-duty-station officers are scheduled for their first-term courses.
  4. Housing and EFMP. You'll get the chance to book appointments with the Military Housing Office and, if you're Q-coded, the EFMP-Family Support office.
  5. Then house hunt. Finish in-processing with the DMWC and your unit before taking permissive leave for house hunting.

Got married before the move? Tell your inbound first sergeant or commander and follow their procedures exactly, or the military won't pay for your spouse's travel and housing. Register your spouse in DEERS (you need the marriage certificate), then call TRICARE West to enroll them.

Housing: on base or off

Family housing at Davis-Monthan is privatized. Soaring Heights Communities owns, maintains and manages it, so you sign a lease with them. Your other option is to rent or buy in Tucson. Military OneSource says to contact the Military Housing Office as soon as you know you're moving. They'll explain the application and any base-specific rules (source).

Temporary lodging: the Heritage Inn takes reservations first come, first served, regardless of rank. PCS and TDY orders are generally Priority 1. Pet-friendly TLFs cost $10 per room per night, limited to two dogs or cats, and you need proof of a current rabies shot at check-in. If you need more than 30 days, submit a hardship letter; approval depends on availability (source, source).

TRICARE and medical care

Tucson is in the TRICARE West Region. The contractor is TriWest Healthcare Alliance, 888-TRIWEST (874-9378) (tricare.mil, West Region). The 355th Medical Group provides basic medical and dental care, chiropractic, orthopedics, physical therapy, EFMP and Family Advocacy. It has no obstetrical, urgent care or emergency room services. Women's health is mainly for active duty and TRICARE Prime enrollees; others are seen when space is available. Book appointments at 520-228-2778 or in the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal. After hours, the Nurse Advice Line is 800-TRICARE (874-2273), option 1 (source).

Changing TRICARE plans because of the move? A PCS is a Qualifying Life Event. See TRICARE Open Season 2026 and QLEs.

Arizona tip: plan for hard water. Hard tap water is common in both Tucson and Phoenix, which matters for appliances, water heaters and spotty dishes. Our sister site ClearTap Guide lists the utility-published hardness for each area ZIP code: Tucson water hardness by ZIP and Phoenix water hardness by ZIP. ClearTap Guide has the same owner as FAFO Mil and may earn money when it connects readers with water-treatment dealers (disclosure).

Luke AFB (Glendale, west Phoenix metro)

Luke AFB, in Glendale, is home to the 56th Fighter Wing, the Air Force's largest fighter wing (Military OneSource). Its ZIP code, 85309, is in the Phoenix, AZ (AZ013) housing area in the 2026 BAH data: E-5 $2,289 with dependents / $1,740 without; O-3 $2,490 / $2,391. Check your grade in the BAH calculator.

Hand-carry list (Luke): PCS orders; IDs, marriage and birth certificates, passports and Social Security cards; medical and immunization records for family and pets; LESs; proof of car insurance and registration; school records; your household goods inventory; vehicle bills of sale; and your sponsorship package. It's a good list for Davis-Monthan too.

Moving in summer with pets? Military OneSource's Luke AFB page warns that airlines usually won't ship pets in or out from April to September because of the heat. Plan another way, and ask your sponsor.

PCS money checklist

What we couldn't verify: Visitor Center hours differ between official pages: dm.af.mil's home page says Mon–Fri 5:30 a.m.–7 p.m., with the Craycroft gate issuing passes after hours, but its newcomers page and Military OneSource say 24/7. Call 520-228-0135 before you go. Military OneSource's Davis-Monthan check-in page and Luke health page still list an old TRICARE West number (844-866-9378) and contractor. We use the tricare.mil listing: TriWest, 888-874-9378. Military OneSource also lists a second Heritage Inn number (520-228-3230); we show 520-228-3309, which appears on both of its Davis-Monthan pages. Luke's housing page shows two different office addresses and sets of hours, so we list phone numbers only. We read the .mil pages through a fetch service because .mil sites block our server, and travel.dod.mil only through search results. Phone numbers and hours change, so confirm with the base.
